Although it probably doesn’t make sense for many boomers, esports events are one of the most popular sports competitions today. Video game competitions actually unite millions of followers, which are increasing every day.

However, esports is not a phenomenon of this century. In 1972, one of the first gaming competitions of its kind was held, which focused on the Spacewar game, and the prize at that time for the winner consisted of a subscription to Rolling Stone magazine for one year. However, this competition was small, and it wasn’t until 1980 that Atari held the first major video game competition, with more than 10,000 participants.

Although those figures don’t seem impressive, they laid the groundwork for several countries to invest in these events. In fact, esports tournaments have become millionaire businesses, so there are many who are interested not only in participating but also in sponsoring these events.

The expansion of gaming competitions has helped create new business models that focus on promoting this ecosystem worldwide.

Can esports tournaments be created with any game?

Although there is currently an almost infinite number of video games available, not all of them are suitable for esports. For a game to be considered in these competitions, certain characteristics must be met, unofficially:

  • The game should allow the confrontation between two or more players under the same conditions. That is, games should not allow players to gain more experience or benefits after making purchases or transactions within the video game. That is, players would depend on their individual skills to improve within the game.
  • There must be a significant number of game followers or who participate in the games, which would attract sponsors for the streaming games.
  • This would lead to the formation of official competitions and leagues with established regulations. As for the competitions, the sponsors organize these, while the leagues must have professional teams and players.

Although there are many games that could meet these characteristics, not all of them have enough fans or followers to be considered within the list of games allowed in esports.

Currently, these are the main video games that are part of esports today:

  • League of Legends.
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
  • Rocket League.
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • Call of Duty.
  • Dota 2.
  • FIFA series.
  • Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds.
  • Fortnite.
  • Tetris.
  • Pokemon.
  • Gears of War.
  • Among Others.

3- 2021 The International

This event was canceled last year due to COVID, so there are high expectations behind it this year. Valve is in charge of organizing it, and it will probably be the biggest esports event of this year.

The International focuses on DOTA 2 players, and the competition consists of 18 teams fighting for the prize pool. This prize pool is crowdfunded with the battle pass system within the game, so more money is added to the prizes with each transaction. According to experts in the sector, you could expect at least a prize of USD 40 million.

This competition will take place during the month of August 2021.

4- LCS 2021 Championship
